Barney was surrendered by his owner to us in early May. Aged 14 years.

This week Barney has been adopted. Now aged 15.

Barney has multiple health issues. Spleen, liver, heart, gallbladder, cruciate. He’s deaf.

He had a major dental when he arrived, ultrasound, X-rays. He’s on medication for his gallbladder issues, pain relief for his arthritis.

To get him back to a relatively healthy state we’d need to remove most of his organs…..!

So instead of putting him through surgeries that would put his quality of life at risk, we decided at 15 years of age that Barney would be able to live the rest of his life in a quiet home, one that’s close enough for us to get him to our vets. A place where he’s the centre of attention and doesn’t have to compete with other animals for ‘me’ time.

Enter Nanny Margaret! A dear friend who has had dogs all her life. Who Sean visits every week with our gang for a tipple! and to chat football with.

Barney is a quiet old fellow. He loves to sleep. And he’s rather fond of his now daily outing to the cafe for coffee and treats – he loves the car, and he enjoys being by Margaret’s side while she catches up with friends and he can chat to passing dogs.

He uses the doggie door at home and will take himself outside to potter around, he has his bed in the lounge so he can have his afternoon nap, and his bed is besides Margaret’s at night, so he’s happy with the bedroom arrangement!

This is the absolute best home for Barney. We don’t discriminate against older people adopting dogs from us, as long as we feel the match is perfect, and at the age Barney is he doesn’t need a home with young children, or a family who are busy working, he’s not fussed with playing with other dogs so much – he’ll interact for a few minutes and he’ll move on.

Barney’s medical needs are being managed. We are here to support him and Margaret if the need arises. But to place Barney in a home that fits his needs and to have him settled for whatever time he has left was our goal, we did have moments where we thought that was never going to be possible, but here we are ♥️
