The amount of judgement that comes out when we mention certain medication, Cytopoint being one of them, honestly blows me away.
Here’s the reality.
Jordy is 16 years old.
Constant itching, angry red rashes, uncomfortable in his own body.
We’ve done the “natural” route. We’ve done the prescription route. We’ve done the in-between route. Diet overhauls, oils, creams, elimination trials… all of it.
What works best for him?
Cytopoint when he needs it.
He still has gentle walks.
He still has a spring in his step.
He still has spark.
Every medication has risk. So does doing nothing. Pretending that avoiding “chemicals” is somehow the moral high ground doesn’t make a dog more comfortable.
Our job as his guardians is to weigh up risk vs benefit and make decisions based on his quality of life — not on internet outrage.
Cytopoint targets the itch pathway specifically. It’s not a blanket immune suppressant like steroids, knowing this dog and watching what helps him and what doesn’t is the most effective way to keep Jordy happy and most importantly, comfortable.
If and when the time comes, he’ll have pain relief if it’s needed. At this stage of his life, comfort matters more than withholding certain medications just because someone on the internet says so. Longevity without quality isn’t something we’re interested in.
There’s no medal for keeping a dog uncomfortable just so you can say you avoided medication.
Keeping our senior dogs as comfortable and supported as possible will always be our priority.
We can’t stop ageing. We can’t prevent every health issue that comes with it. But we can manage it. We can treat it. We can ease it.
They’ve given us their whole lives — the least we can do is have their backs when their bodies start slowing down.
Always ❤️
