💙 Welcome Jack 💙

Late last week, we welcomed 10-year-old Jack into our care from RSPCA Victoria. Before anything else, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to RSPCA Victoria for entrusting us with his care and for the ongoing opportunity to work together to help dogs like Jack find the future they deserve.

Jack’s story is one that tugs at the heart. He arrived at the shelter in February after his owner experienced serious medical issues that sadly made it impossible for them to continue caring for him. Through no fault of his own, Jack suddenly found himself needing a new beginning.

When he arrived, it was clear life had been difficult for some time. He was underweight, suffering from chronic skin disease, painful ear inflammation, severe dental disease, muscle wastage through his hindquarters, and the effects of age and arthritis. His coat was in poor condition, his skin was sore and itchy, and his breath could clear a room. The years had certainly taken their toll on this little man.

Thankfully, Jack has already received treatment for his skin and an initial dental procedure while at the shelter. We will now continue the next stage of his dental treatment, which is likely to involve significant extractions, while also managing his ongoing skin and mobility issues.

Yet despite everything, Jack remains incredibly gentle.

He has the kind of eyes that stop you in your tracks. Old soul eyes. Eyes that seem to tell a story of resilience, loyalty and hardship. He carries himself like a dog who has been through a lot and is feeling every bit of it, but still chooses kindness.

His foster carers have quickly fallen for him and we cannot thank them enough for their patience, compassion and support as he settles into foster care.

We’re learning that Jack simply loves being near his people. He follows them from room to room, curls up nearby while they work, and happily joins them on the couch in the evening. At night, he sleeps at the foot of the bed on his special pillow, and in the mornings he climbs up for gentle pats before starting his day.

He is house-trained, and happily potters around the garden alongside his foster family rather than wandering away. He enjoys a little play when the mood strikes him and recently surprised everyone with an enthusiastic toy session. He may be 10 years old, but there is still a playful little spark in there.

Like many dogs who have experienced significant change, discomfort and uncertainty, Jack can be reactive towards other dogs when out and about. Right now, the world can feel a little overwhelming for him at times. As he continues to settle, heal and learn that he is safe, we will be helping him navigate those moments with patience and understanding. At home, however, his gentle nature shines through, and all he really wants is to be close to the people he trusts.

At the vet, despite being uncomfortable and a little unsure, Jack was incredibly brave. He accepted treats, tolerated his examination, and showed everyone what a good boy he truly is.

There is still a road ahead for Jack. His skin remains itchy, his arthritis slows him down, and his dental journey isn’t over yet. But already we are seeing glimpses of a happier dog emerging — a dog who is beginning to feel safe, loved and cared for.

No dog should be judged solely by their age or medical needs. Beneath the dermatitis, the dental disease, the stiff joints and the weary eyes is a sweet, affectionate little gentleman who simply wants to be close to people and enjoy whatever time lies ahead.

Welcome to your new chapter, Jack. We think you’re pretty special 🩵
