This gorgeous little man is Billy, a 4½-year-old Shih Tzu x (possibly Maltese), and today marks the beginning of a brand new chapter in his life.
Billy and his brother Ollie have been together since birth, but sadly their lives were incredibly limited. They spent their days in a backyard with no walks, no socialisation with other dogs, no preventative veterinary care, and it’s unknown when they last saw a vet. They weren’t vaccinated, desexed or registered, and the boys had developed a history of fighting with each other. Since being separated, both have already shown signs of being much happier and more relaxed.
At the shelter, Billy was described as an anxious little fellow who didn’t enjoy being touched. Lead pressure terrified him to the point that he screamed. Just imagine the fear this little boy must have been carrying.
A huge thank you to foster carers Giulia and Bill, who collected both boys from the shelter before making the four-hour round trip home. Along the way they dropped Ollie safely into the loving care of foster mum Jo and her wonderful little pack, before continuing home with Billy.
And yes… before anyone asks, we’ll be introducing Ollie properly very soon!
Now, back to Billy…
Within hours of arriving home, Billy began to show us who he really is.
Although nervous about the stairs and unsure of his new surroundings, he accepted being picked up without any fuss. He met his foster siblings beautifully, happily explored the house, and while dinner wasn’t initially on the agenda, a little hand-feeding soon gave him the confidence to finish every last mouthful.
By the evening, Billy had happily settled on Bill’s lap, soaking up gentle pats and cuddles. He chose to sleep beside his foster mum on a spare pillow, and this morning greeted everyone with a wagging tail, happily heading outside before waiting patiently for breakfast.
It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do.
Shelter behaviour is only one snapshot of a dog’s life. Fear, stress and uncertainty can completely change how a dog presents. Once they’re given safety, patience and kindness, they often begin to show their true personalities.
We never truly know what will happen when we open our front door and introduce a frightened dog into our homes and amongst our own family dogs, but we take that chance every single time because they deserve the opportunity to experience the love, security and life they’ve always deserved.
Billy still has a journey ahead of him. He needs veterinary care, a good bath, a much-needed groom, and time to continue building his confidence. But already this sweet little soul is proving that underneath the fear is a gentle, loving companion just waiting to blossom.
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the incredible rescue team at RSPCA Victoria for entrusting Billy and Ollie to our care. We can’t wait to show the world just how much these boys are capable of when they’re given a second chance ♥️
