This is the reality of puppy farming.
Meet Hazel 🤍
One of our beautiful Labradoodle girls who has come into our care after being treated through RSPCA Victoria.
Hazel is the second of three Labradoodles we are welcoming — with one more still to arrive.
When foster mum Vanessa collected her from the shelter, she wouldn’t even walk — she had to be carried in and out of the car.
Arriving at her foster home, the resident dogs, Betsie and Sophie, initially barked, but quickly seemed to understand. They softened, quietly sniffed her, and gently tried to show her how to come inside.
Hazel found a spot by the window, and hasn’t moved since.
Even when taken outside, she simply sat in the corner. No exploring, no curiosity — just stillness.
This isn’t “settling in.”
This is trauma.
Her eyes tell a story no dog should ever have to carry… and her physical condition makes it impossible to ignore — her body bearing the toll of being forced to produce litter after litter.
For dogs like Hazel, the world is completely unfamiliar. A home, a garden, kindness, it’s all new. After likely never living in a real home, and then spending time in a noisy shelter environment, she has simply shut down to cope.
But even in this space, something important is happening.
She is safe.
Her foster carer is giving her exactly what she needs right now — space, quiet, and gentle reassurance. Sitting nearby, within her eyesight, softly reminding her that she is loved and that she’s finally safe.
No expectations. No pressure.
Just the beginning of trust.
She will never be bred again.
She will never be treated as disposable again.
And at her own pace… she will learn a different life.
Her progress may be almost invisible to most, but we know that one day, there will be a moment where she chooses to take a step forward.
And we’ll be right there when she does.
Thank you to our incredible foster carers, who open their homes to the most broken souls and give them the time they need to heal.
If you’d like to support dogs like Hazel on their journey, just sharing this post with others can help us raise awareness about the horrific abuse (because that’s what it is) of dogs forced to breed.
