Dear Chester,

This isn’t the letter we wanted to write.

Six short weeks ago, you arrived in our care. A tired senior man who had known far too much neglect, yet somehow your beautiful, gentle soul remained untouched. You never held a grudge. You never stopped trusting. You simply accepted every kind hand, every soft bed and every little act of love that came your way.

From the moment you arrived, we knew your journey would take time. There were medical hurdles to overcome before we could find what we wanted most for you, a forever home where you would spend your golden years safe, cherished and surrounded by love. A place where you would never know fear again. A place where your only job would be to rest.

We truly believed we’d get you there.

Before you came to us, RSPCA Victoria entrusted us with your care, and for that we are sincerely grateful. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to know this remarkable little man. It was a privilege we will never take for granted.

But life had other plans.

After a restless night, your little body let us know it had fought enough. This morning your breathing became laboured, and you could no longer stand on your own. Leigh didn’t hesitate. She wrapped you in love and rushed you to the emergency clinic, hoping there was something more that could be done.

There wasn’t.

The kindest gift we could give you was peace.

You slipped away with Leigh by your side, knowing comfort, kindness and love in your final moments. And while our hearts are broken, there is comfort in knowing you were never alone.

To your incredible foster carers, Karen and Leigh, thank you. Thank you for opening your hearts and your home to a little dog who needed somewhere safe to land. Thank you for every cuddle, every meal, every medication, every sleepless night and every decision made with nothing but love. You gave Chester exactly what he deserved, a place where he could finally rest, surrounded by people who cared deeply for him.

Our hearts are with you.

At Sweet Paws, every dog who comes into our care has one goal, to find the loving home they deserve. Most do.

Sometimes, heartbreak reminds us that despite all our hope, all our effort and all the love we have to give, we cannot change the ending.

But we can change the journey.

And Chester, we hope we did that for you.

We hope that in your final weeks you felt loved. We hope you knew you were safe, with warm blankets, gentle voices and loving hands. We hope that after a lifetime of being overlooked, you knew that you mattered. Because you did.

You touched so many hearts in such a short time, and your story will stay with us forever.

Thank you for trusting us.

We are so incredibly grateful that you found your way to Sweet Paws, even if only for a little while.

Run free now, sweet Chester.

No more pain.
No more struggle.
Just endless fields, sunshine and peace.

You were loved.
You always will be.

Until we meet again ♥️

Love always,
everyone at Sweet Paws Dog Rescue
